What We Do At Operation First Response
Operation First Response mission (OFR) is to assist the wounded military
and
their families with personal and financial needs who are serving our
country
during Operation Iraqi Freedom and forward. OFR is an all volunteer,
501 (c)(3) tax-exempt organization. Your donations are tax deductible
though
donors are strongly encouraged to consult with their independent tax
expert
as to the tax benefit of their donation.
OFR sends backpacks (OFR backpacks) filled with a t-shirt, boxer shorts,
sweatpants or shorts, socks, and a complete array of hygiene items (all
hygiene items should be travel size) along with a handmade lap quilt in
each OFR backpack. OFR backpacks are sent to the combat support hospitals
(CHS) in Iraq, Landstuhl Army Medical Hospital in Germany, and other
locations
when contacted by military liaisons that are in need of our service. OFR
back-
packs are dispersed as needed by our representative (Carolyn C. - Vice
President of OFR) and liaisons at Landstuhl and CSH staff at their
locations.
OFR asks for donated airline miles from the public to make it possible
to provide family members and wounded heroes airline flights. OFR also
collects donations to pay for the fees involved with the acquisition of
airline tickets. When award miles for flights are unavailable OFR
purchases the needed tickets. To date OFR has not flown family members
to Germany, families whose wounded is very critical are more often than
not flown by the military to Germany.
OFR uses donations to pay for transportation for wounded heroes and their
families to and from the airport (most times in the DC area). This service
is not necessary in Germany. OFR does arrange and pays transportation for
those who are flying into other locations where the military has hospitals
or
having a wounded person rehabilitated in a special facility in the U.S.
OFR makes frequent visits to Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) to
meet
with
wounded military and families of the wounded. At this time OFR brings
requested
items such as groceries, clothing, hygiene items, books, and monetary
assistance
to those who are greatly in need. OFR is contacted with or is approached
by the
wounded or families of the wounded with requests for assistance-a private
OFR
informational form is filled out as to identify the person(s) along with
the written
requested need(s). OFR quickly makes a determination and assists when
able.
OFR
also brings the need to the attention of organizations (only with the
consent
of
the wounded hero or the familiy of the wounded) who offer monetary grants
if the
person(s) are in need of long-term financial help or has larger monetary
needs than
what OFR can accommodate.
Please note:
Operation First Response is unable to reimburse for for flights, lodging,
food, loans
from private individuals, debt already paid by individual.
OFR is in
existence to be
a fairly short term assist to those who service
members who have been
wounded or
become gravely ill while deployed.
Operation First Response is most importantly a firm shoulder to those who
need one.
OFR's overriding goal is to be able to deal with each and every individual
personally
to give much needed emotional support, OFR wants him or her to know they
are heard,
cared about and honored.
