Walter Dashiell, 95, is an Army veteran who was struggling to get the help he needed. His daughter called Grace Can Help after not getting anywhere with the VA. World War II veteran needs help from the VA, but his records were destroyed in a fire

SUGAR LAND, Texas — At the Galveston County Community Action Council, they get calls every day for help, but when they heard about World War II veteran Walter Dashiell’s story they wanted to do something.

We first met Dashiell in September. His daughter called us for help, after not getting anywhere with the the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Since we started making calls, the VA approved Dashiell for 20 hours a week of home health aide.

“We should do better, we should do better,” said Sonia Boone, PhD, interim executive director at Galveston County Community Action Council.

Dashiell’s been approved for $1,200 in rental assistance. The maximum allowed for one year from the non-profit.
His daughter was still worried he might be evicted, until now.
“We are glad we are able to help, first and foremost – thank you so much for your service to our nation,”  Boone said

The  council serves four counties specifically:

  • Galveston
  • Fort Bend
  • Brazoria
  • Wharton
They do rental and utility assistance, not specifically for veterans, but for anyone who needs help. For more information on the services they offer click here.
Another non-profit confirms to KHOU 11 News, that they too are going to help Mr. Dashiell. Operation First Response’s Founder and President Peggy Baker tells us they are able to provide $2,280 towards his rental assistance. To read more about the services they provide click here.
