On Saturday, May 10, 2014, Verdun Adventure Bound (VAB) will kick-off its first annual Wounded Warriors Challenge and Family Day. The benefit marks the beginning of the new VAB Wounded Warrior Family Program in partnership with Operation First Response, Inc., a nationwide nonprofit dedicated to assisting Disabled Veterans and their families. The Wounded Warriors Challenge and Family Day is a community event, free of charge to all non-competing guests and their families to enjoy the day.

The Wounded Warriors Challenge has four levels of participation with individual and team competition. Student, Family and Adult teams are asked to raise donations ahead of time to support the VAB Wounded Warrior Family Program while individuals are asked to make a donation at will.

The Wounded Warriors Challenge encourages all individuals and teams to pre-register by April 15, 2014 to ensure each competitor receives a race packet of a VAB Wounded Warriors Challenge T-Shirt and bag of goodies. Each competitor is required to pay a $25 registration fee. Day of the race registration is available for individuals and teams without guarantee of a complete race packet.

The Verdun Adventure Bound Wounded Warriors Challenge and Family Day will begin with a morning of community camaraderie and competition. The race buzzer is scheduled to go off at 9:00am for the 5K Cross Country Race with individuals and teams competing for top times. Individual competitors will finish at the Race finish line; however, the four person teams will move onto the second of three Challenges. The remaining two challenges consist of a low ropes element and a paddle-less canoe obstacle pond race.

At noon, all guests and competitors will come together at the Anne Marie Sheridan Amphitheatre to recognize the accomplishments of the individual and team competitors. Verdun Adventure Bound Founder and Chairman, Dr. David Snyder and Operation First Response Founder and President, Peggy Baker, will present awards to the top seven age categories, top student, family and adult team.

Verdun Adventure Bound is “Calling all Chili Chefs” to register for theVerdun Adventure Bound Wounded Warriors Challenge and Family Day “Chili Cook-Off!” The Chili Cook-Off will be held in the Eagles Nest. Set up begins at 11:00AM and all chefs are requested to share their “secret” recipes. Tastings will be offered to guests and judging begins at 12:30. The winners will be announced at the Anne Marie Sheridan Amphitheatre at 2:00pm.

The festivities will continue into the afternoon with musical performances by the Rapidan Ridge and Stoneridge Bluegrass Bands. Guests will also be treated to numerous family activities including hay rides, vendor shopping, food for purchase and a supervised high ropes activity – the Verdun climbing wall! The Passage Creek Shires and Friends will welcome guests to the stable and will be available to talk about therapeutic horsemanship and answer questions about their vaulting team.

The Verdun Adventure Bound Wounded Warriors Challenge and Family Day is proud to have the Little Fork Volunteer Fire Department staff join us with their ambulance and large animal rescue trailer for visitors to enjoy. In the Verdun Adventure Bound greenhouse art studio, Brian Lindenberg, our resident artist, and Anaya Barrera, a Native American Shaman, will share samplings of their beautiful art work and Native American Jewelry. Several of Verdun’s camp sites will have supervised campfires burning with scouts and volunteers offering homemade tea and desserts. Delicious lunches will be available by Warrenton’s Red, Hot and Blue.

The Verdun Adventure Bound Wounded Warriors Challenge and Family Day hours are 7am to 3:00pm. Remember, if you attend as a guest and not a competitor, the day is absolutely free. Chili Cook-Off Chefs should register by calling the Verdun Adventure Bound office at 540.937.4920. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer for the event, please contact Honore Hastings, Verdun Adventure Bound Executive Director or Peggy Baker, Operation First Response Founder and President.
